He was the 79th Woodward died today in hospital, her agent, Janet Glass, said in a statement, praising his "courageous spirit and wonderful sense of humor. The actor suffered from several diseases, including pneumonia, Glass said.
Woodward’s career spanned almost seven decades and he was a veteran of stage, including Shakespeare productions, film and television, enjoying success in all three media. He also recorded albums of music, poetry and audio books. In “Callan,” a spy series of hour-long episodes that ran on British television from 1967 to 1973, Woodward played special agent David Callan, who was tasked with getting rid of dangerous or undesirable people, including Soviet agents.
More than a decade later, Woodward was on the small screen again with the same character, this time American television. His image of the former secret agent Robert McCall in the "Equalizer," won him the Golden Globe for best actor in 1987.
