Beyonce performed her Video of The Year-winning track “Single Ladies” at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, live from Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sunday. Madonna made a touching surprise appearance to introduce the Michael Jackson tribute. At times, Madge gave more focus to the qualities shared between herself and the late pop star rather than the qualities that made him the King of Pop. However, she redeemed herself with a story of their early friendship and by discussing the obstacles Jackson faced in his final years.
Brand was back in fine (or tasteless) form, depending on your perception. There is no denying that he kept things lively throughout the night. The VMAs also made the mistake of inviting the most egocentric pop star on Earth, Kanye West, and giving him a choice seat. (More on that later.) Here are some highlights and lowlights from this year's VMAs, which aired live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City:
Serious stuff - Madonna opened the broadcast with a spoken intro for a tribute to Michael Jackson, who died in June at age 50. She mentioned several parallels between her life and Jackson's but said a major difference was that "he never had a childhood. And when you never have something, you become obsessed with it." She recalled an evening spent with the self-proclaimed "King of Pop," dining out and watching a movie. She went a bit over the top when she started talking about "the witch hunt" and "the roar of the lynch mob" that she apparently felt ruined Jackson's life, as if his bizarre behavior on several occasions and legal problems had nothing to do with the intense publicity and personal struggles that he faced. "He was a king, but, alas, he was also a human being," Madonna said.
